What Is It?
The birth control patch is a thin, beige, 1¾-inch (4½-centimeter) square patch that sticks to the skin. The way it works is by releasing hormones through the skin into the bloodstream to prevent pregnancy. These hormones are chemical substances that control the functionong of the body’s organs.
How Does It Work?
It contains a combination of the hormones progesterone and estrogen. The patch prevents ovulation, which releases the eggs from the ovaries during a woman’s monthly cycle.
The hormones thicken the mucus produced in the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to enter and reach any eggs that may be released. The hormones sometimes affect the lining of the uterus. Therefor if the egg is feterlized it will have difficulties attaching to the wall of the uterus.
Patches are similar to other birth control that use hormones. Such as “the pill” and ” the ring”, they are based on woman’s monthly cycle. The patch must be put on the first day of monstrual cycle or the first sunday after menstrual cycle begins. Patch will be replaced on skin once a week for three weeks in a row. It can be applied to four areas only: the abdomen, the buttocks, upper arm, or upper torso, except the breasts. On the fourth week, no patch will be applied. For woman’s menstrual cycle will be starting during this time.
How Well Does It Work?
Many studies suggest that the birth control patch is as effective as the birth control pill. Which means that about 8 out of 100 couples will have an unintended pregnancy during the first year of use. The chance of getting pregnant depends on whether the patch is used correctly. Delaying or missing a weekly application or removing a patch too early, reduces its effectiveness and increases the chance of pregnancy.
For woman who weigh more than 198lbs (90 kilograms), run the risk of the contraceptive patch being less effective in preventing pregnancy.
Therefor the effectiveness of how well each type of birth control method works, depends on many things. Which include wether the patient has any health conditions or is taking any medication that may intefere with the patch. The effectiveness of the patch at preventing pregnancy also depends on whether the method chosen is covenient to the patient. Also, whether the patient remembers to use it correctly at all times.
